World Population Day in Ghana -2015
The World Population Day is annually observed on the 11th of July internationally. The global theme for 2015 is “Vulnerable Populations in Emergencies”. In Ghana, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Ghana in collaboration with the National Population Council (NPC) of Ghana with some Stakeholders celebrated this year’s World Population Day on Friday 10th of July, 2015.
It was held at the Senior Correctional Center formerly the Ghana Borstal Institute under the theme “Vulnerable Populations in Emergencies: Youth in Confinement”. Stakeholders included Representatives from the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection, The Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit (DOVVSU) of the Ghana Police Service, Planned Parenthood Association of Ghana (PPAG), Hope for Future Generations and other Non-Governmental Organizations.
To play a significant role in the celebration of the World Population Day, team members from UNFPA, NPC, PPAG and other Stakeholders spent half a day with the Inmates of the Senior Correctional Center. The PPAG Team comprised: of the Programme Coordinator of the Global Fund Programme, Programme Coordinator of Global Comprehensive Abortion Care Initiative (GCACI), the Quality of Care Coordinator and a Team of Staff and Young Volunteers of the Young and Wise Center of PPAG.
Activities included: a Counselling Session in the areas of adolescent sexual and reproductive health, vocational skills training, formal school training, career guidance and parental care and control. For the interactions to be more effective, inmates were divided into smaller groups with a team member leading the discussions. The discussions were very interactive and fruitful. Other activities included presentations by the Country Director of UNFPA – Babatunde Ahonsi, the Deputy Director of Prisons (DDP) in charge of the Center, DDP Chris Larvie and some stakeholders.
The programme ended with an entertainment segment of singing and dancing by the Inmates with some invited guests participating in it. The PPAG Team was glad to be a part of this year’s World Population Day!
